08 Nov Tips On Selecting a Business Coach
I am often asked by business leaders if coaching could help them resolve issues and achieve their goals. And if so, how could they go about finding the right person to help them?
Coaching works exceptionally well because an experienced coach does not tell you what to do; rather, he helps you and your leadership team find your own solutions through questions and introducing to specific tools, as needed.
Leading your business to greater success usually depends on changing some behaviours and habits among the entire leadership team so everyone is aligned and committed.
Choosing the right coach for you may seem complex at first, but if you know what questions to ask, you can make the right choice for you.
Look for someone with a diverse range of experiences (which does not necessarily have to come from your own industry sector—in fact, someone from a different field may bring valuable perspectives to your company), a solid record of success, and a style you feel you can work with personally.
Here are a few tips to select one:
TIP #1
Be clear about what you want help with.
● Is it about your team performance?
● Is it about a sustainable growth strategy?
● Is it about improving profitability?
There are lots of coaches out there with many different specialties. A generalist coach who has broad expertise can often bring added value to the process, as you and your team are the specialists in your field.
TIP #2
Find a coach with a style that meshes well with your personality, and whom you feel you can trust to be honest about what he/she observes. It’s important to find someone who will tell you the truth, even if it’s not what you or your team want to hear.
It is also essential to be honest with yourself. If you feel that you need more accountability and motivation (it can be lonely at the top…), make sure to select a coach who has a firm and effective approach.
A coach can help you develop the skills you need to progress in your career. They will challenge you in a way that helps you learn and grow.
TIP #3
It’s important to check the coach’s reputation thoroughly – good coaches will provide references from previous and current clients. You can lean a lot of useful information from former clients’ comments about their coach’s methods.
